How It Started

In 2021, a small group of residents in the St. John's East Meadows area talked about starting a community garden in the neighbourhood. After careful planning, they approached the City of St. John's about building a community garden on unused park land. In August, 2021, with the help of a grant from Newfoundland Power and support from the Newfoundland Horticultural Society the garden was constructed. Many volunteers from the community, Newfoundland Power, the City of St. John's and the Newfoundland Horticultural Society pitched in to help with the construction. In the summer of 2022, East Meadows Community Garden opened in the park off Cambridge Avenue in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Where We Are Today

Today we have 12 raised beds and one elevated bed for adults with limited mobility. The beds are rented on an annual basis to individuals or families who wish to have their own growing space. We also have four few communal beds that we work on together as a team to seed, grow, and harvest.

The garden is a friendly place for individuals and families to visit and learn about how to grow fruits and vegetables. Everyone is welcome.
